Editors viewpoint: miracle on the nhs
Thursday, 9 June 2011
The NHS is often berated, but daily it performs miracles of care and treatment. Belfast man Jim Brown is a case in point.
He had a brain tumour removed by a revolutionary new machine, a gamma knife, which uses beams of gamma radiation to excise malignant or abnormal tissue. It is a non-invasive treatment and Mr Brown was able to go home the following day and was back playing his beloved golf shortly afterwards.
This treatment may sound like the realms of science fiction, but it demonstrates what a precious jewel the health service is and why it must be protected as much as possible even in these times of austerity.
